Monday, March 14: Sock Monsters/Pets
SOLD OUT | Monster or pet (or a pet monster?), it’s up to you: we’ll take a simple sock and use stitchery magic to transform it into a stuffed toy that you’ll be proud of! We’ll start the workshop by sketching out our plans on paper and then you’ll learn simple sewing techniques that will help you bring your drawing to life. We have a lot of materials on hand for you to personalize your creation so that every toy coming out of the workshop that day will be utterly unique.
Tuesday, March 15: Loom Weaving
SOLD OUT | Using simple materials, each participant will construct a mini loom and then weave a wall-hanging using a variety of fibres, including yarn, ribbon, string and fabric. You’ll learn basic weaving techniques and you’ll bring away a loom that you can use for future projects – as well as a great piece of weaving for decorating your room at home!
Wednesday, March 16: Bookbinding
SOLD OUT | Create a series of mini-journals! You’ll learn how to bind soft-cover signatures (simple books) using textured cover paper that you can stamp to decorate. These journals are perfect for writing or sketching in and once you’ve learned how to make them, you can create more for gifts!
Thursday, March 17: Embroidered Banner
Learn some introductory embroidery stitches as you personalize a banner to hang in your space at home: you can stitch your name, or a word with special meaning to you. Use buttons, sequins, fabric collage and more to give extra style to your banner.
Friday, March 18: Resist-Dyeing With Indigo
SOLD OUT | Be a part of the magical process of indigo-dyeing as you use folding and tying techniques to make patterns on fabric. Indigo will dye fabric a beautiful sky blue – except where we have created “resists” with our folds and ties, which will remain the original fabric colour. You’ll decorate your own set of napkins that you and your family can use at home!
Note: The workshops Sock Monsters/Pets and Embroidered Banner require that students use a hand-sewing needle. It is recommended that for the Resist-Dyeing With Indigo class, students wear older clothes as staining might occur (the instructor alone will be using the actual dye vat but the students will be nearby to watch the dyeing process).
