Bundle-dyeing is a method of applying colour derived from natural dye materials onto fibres, yielding stunning, watercolour-like effects. Our “canvas” will be an organic cotton tote bag; our “paints” will be plant materials such as dried marigolds and onion skins; cochineal beetles; and various plant extracts. By sprinkling these raw materials on our prepared fabric and then wrapping and binding them, with the addition of heat the materials will leave their impressions on the bags. Every bag will come out utterly unique! You’ll learn how to scour cellulose (plant-based) fibres for dyeing and how to mordant them so that the dyes remain: the skills you learn in this class can be applied to your future natural dye experiments.
